As global environmental awareness continues to rise, the food packaging industry is undergoing profound transformation. Traditional plastic packaging faces increasingly strict regulatory pressure due to issues like difficult degradation and environmental pollution, while new eco-friendly packaging represented by bio-based materials and biodegradable plastics is accelerating its growth.

According to industry reports, the global bio-based food packaging market exceeded $5 billion in 2025, and is expected to continue expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 12% by 2030. This growth is driven by three main factors: first, the EU, US and other regions have introduced plastic restrictions, forcing companies to shift to eco-friendly alternatives; second, consumer preference for sustainable packaging has significantly increased, especially among younger demographics who are willing to pay premium prices for eco-friendly products; third, bio-based material technology continues to mature, costs are declining year by year, and application scenarios are continuously expanding.

In terms of technical pathways, PLA (polylactic acid) and PBAT (polybutylene adipate/terephthalate) have achieved large-scale production. These materials can complete degradation within 180 days under industrial composting conditions, a stark contrast to traditional plastics that require hundreds of years to decompose. Meanwhile, natural materials such as starch-based and cellulose-based materials are also showing promising application prospects in the food packaging field.

Industry analysts believe that food packaging companies should seize this transformation opportunity by increasing R&D investment in bio-based materials while actively deploying biodegradable product lines. For small and medium-sized enterprises, they can reduce transformation risks by establishing strategic partnerships with raw material suppliers and participating in industry standard formulation, gaining a competitive edge in the green track.

It is foreseeable that with technological progress and cost reduction, eco-friendly food packaging will shift from an "option" to a "necessity", becoming an important engine driving the sustainable development of the industry.
