As global environmental awareness continues to rise and policies such as plastic restriction mandates are implemented more rigorously, the food packaging industry is undergoing a profound green transformation. PLA (Polylactic Acid) biodegradable film, as a representative of bio-based materials, is gradually becoming a new favorite in the food packaging sector.
PLA is a thermoplastic aliphatic polyester synthesized through fermentation and polymerization using renewable plant resources such as corn and sugarcane as raw materials. Its greatest advantage lies in its ability to fully decompose into carbon dioxide and water under industrial composting conditions within six months, fundamentally solving the white pollution problem caused by traditional plastics. In terms of food safety performance, PLA has obtained FDA certification in the United States and EFSA certification in the European Union, fully meeting the safety standards for food contact materials.
In terms of performance, high-quality PLA film has transparency, tensile strength, and heat-sealing properties close to traditional PE cling wrap, capable of meeting the needs of various application scenarios including supermarket fresh produce packaging, takeaway food packaging, and frozen food packaging. Particularly in cold chain logistics, PLA film demonstrates excellent low-temperature resistance, maintaining good flexibility and sealing performance even at minus 20 degrees Celsius.
Leading domestic food packaging companies are increasing their R&D investment in PLA biodegradable film. A technical director from an Xiamen-based food packaging material producer stated: "We are optimistic about the long-term development prospects of PLA materials. Our company has established a complete PLA film production line in Xiamen, Fujian, with an annual production capacity of several thousand tons. The products have been supplied to several well-known supermarket chains and catering brands."
Industry analysis suggests that the penetration rate of PLA biodegradable film in the food packaging sector is expected to increase significantly over the next five years. With production scale expansion and process optimization, the cost of PLA film will further decrease, making its cost-performance advantage more evident. For food enterprises, early adoption of biodegradable packaging is not only an embodiment of social responsibility but also an important competitive advantage.
